Undara Volcanic National Park

Undara Volcanic National Park is a unique area of immense geological and ecological significance. Formed some 300 million years ago, when Australia was still a part of the supercontinent Gondwanaland. The Undara lava tubes are some of the longest in the world and provide a habitat for a unique collection of Australian plants and animals. Dry savanna woodland gives way to lush green rainforests around the lava caves.

Undara Volcanic National Park is home to kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, birds, frogs, snakes and more, but the incredible bat population which call the caves home seem to be an endless source of fascination.

Between December and March the bats leave the caves to feed as dusk settles across the landscape. A natural phenomenon occurs where the Brown Tree Snakes (also known as ‘Night Tigers’) snatch the bats from mid-air. An incredible sight to behold.
