Townsville attraction - The Great Barrier Reef HQ Aquarium

The Great Barrier Reef HQ Aquarium is the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium. It’s also the National Reef Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority so be prepared to open your eyes to the incredible underwater world of charismatic marine creatures.

Get to know the rare and extraordinary creatures and features of the Great Barrier Reef, and you don’t even need to get wet!

The Predator Exhibit will give you nigh magical views of the watery depths and predators that prowl there. The exhibit features a replica bow section of North Queensland’s most famous shipwreck, the S. S. Yongala. See black tip reef sharks and giant trevally and learn how the role these massive predators play in the ecosystem of the reef.

You can catch a Predator Dive Show in the morning as they take centre stage during feeding time. After that you might like to engage in a Turtle Talk and visit North Queensland’s one and only Turtle Hospital where sick and injured marine turtles are cared for and nurtured back to health before being set back into the wild.

Visitors of all ages can now get a brilliant hands on experience at the Discovery Lagoon. Creature Feature workshops are held all throughout the days and offer kids a chance to learn and play with some of the amazing marine creatures of the Great Barrier Reef.

The Great Barrier Reef has one of the most diverse and complex ecosystems in the world and the work to preserve it for future generations continues. Part of the reason Reef HQ opened back in June 1987, was to recreate the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef on land, making it accessible and affordable while at the same time spreading the reef conservation message.
