Take the drive from Cairns up the mountains to Mareeba – it’s the incredibly stunning landscape that inspired James Cameron to make Avatar.
Mareeba is a beautiful melting pot of pristine rainforests, coastal ranges, rich and fertile plains filled where local farmers grow mangoes, pawpaw, coffee, macadamia nuts, sugar cane, pineapples, cashews, bananas and more.
It's part of the lush tablelands of the Australian Tropics and life flourishes here. The locals boast that the climate is the best in Queensland and perhaps Australia, with 300 sunny days a year with clean air, low humidity and cool evenings.
Less than an hours drive west of Cairns, situation at the furthest northern reaches of the Atherton Tablelands - it’s a gateway town, a hub from which her travellers can continue north to Cooktown, Weipa and the tip of Cape York, or along the Wheelbarrow Way into the experiences of the Gulf Country. Other still Journey south into the Atherton Tablelands.
The town itself is a wondrous place, with history of stirring stories and colourful characters and the spirit of that early development sticks around to this day.
Don’t miss out on the Mareeba Rodeo which this year is taking place on the 16TH AND 17TH JULY 2016. The town overflows with jackaroos and horsemen from around Australia and the world who come to compete. For spectators there’s plenty to watch and you may like to join in the evening country and western music dances and festivities.
Mareeba is a wildlife lover's dream. Abundant species of native wildlife inhabit the surrounding region. Be sure to visit the celebrated Mareeba Tropical Savannah and Wetland Reserve. This 5000 acre sanctuary is home to some of the most iconic Australian animals and birds. You may catch a glimpse of the rare ‘Gouldian Finch, an exquisite little bird known as the ‘Jewel of the Savannah’ with the ambitious project to reintroduce the endangered species.
Go horse riding, bush walking, canoeing, kayaking, go-karting, view aboriginal art, visit the fantastic Mareeba Heritage Centre, take a train on the Savannahlander, learn to throw a boomerang, cook a damper and make a didgeridoo or visit the quaint drive-in-theatre!
